For Sandra Measels, the best part of storytelling is the sense of community she feels when telling or hearing a good story. Twice she has told at the National Storytelling Network’s Fringe: “She Called Him Mister, but She Didn’t Mean It” in Kansas City and “Mary Magdalene: A Woman of Substance” on Zoom in 2022.
More recently, she was selected as one of four New Voices for the Stone Soup Storytelling Festival in Woodruff, SC. There, she told her version of “The Witch of Yazoo City” on the festival stage and participated in the festival’s tellers-in-school program, telling original stories as well as traditional favorites to first graders and kindergarteners.
Her most requested story is the “Lady in Red,” a true account of a famous mystery of the Mississippi Delta, along with an imaginary romance that solves the mystery. Another favorite story is “He Obeyed All the Laws He Could,” a true account of a Mississippi bootlegger who worked when the Special Tax Stamp was required to do business.
She also tells true personal stories about favorite memories and about life’s little mishaps. Other stories are about Old Testament women such as Tamar, Rahab, and Bathsheba.
Sandra enjoys telling at club meetings, banquets, ladies luncheons—anywhere people gather. Her audiences have ranged in size from two to 700. She has told at storytelling festivals in Florida, Texas, and Maryland as well as in Columbus, Natchez, and Meridian.
She is a member of the National Storytelling Network, the Network of Biblical Storytellers International, the Florida Storytelling Association, and the TEJAS (Texas) Storytelling Association.
