JACKSON, MISS. – Sept. 11, 2017 – As part of Mississippi’s bicentennial celebration, the Mississippi Arts Commission will present the photography exhibit “Foodways in the Hill Country” in Como, Miss. from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31, 2017. An opening reception will be held at Home Place Pastures retail store at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15. The exhibit will move to the Como Public Library on Sept. 20 where it will be on display until Oct. 31, 2017. All photographs in the exhibit were taken by Chris Fowler.

This exhibit is a curated showcase of photographs that highlight traditional customs and ways of cooking practiced in Panola County. Featured topics include fried chicken at Mr. Jiffy No. 2 in Batesville, Latham’s Hamburger Inn, RB’s Southern Cuisine, Law’s Hill Fish House, caramel cake, taxidermy, butchering and hog hunting.

“The Mississippi Arts Commission is pleased to present these photos that depict the unique cultural traditions of the people of Mississippi, traditions unique to our state that serve to enliven and unify our communities,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “An important part of our work at MAC is to document these traditions and make resources available to ensure their survival.”

During the reception at Home Place Pastures, featured artists, Dorothy Kerney-Wilbourn and Rubert Morgan, as well as photographer Chris Fowler will be present to share stories and educate the public about the food traditions of the Hill Country in a facilitated discussion.

This exhibit is sponsored by the Mississippi Arts Commission and funded through the support of the National Endowment for the Arts. This event is free and open to the public.
