New Grant Recipients & Program Participants Announced

JACKSON, MISS. – July 11, 2017 – The Mississippi Arts Commission has awarded $1.3 million in funding to artists and arts programs across the state for fiscal year 2018.
Funds were awarded in 46 Mississippi counties, to 140 different organizations and schools and to 61 individual artists. Recipients will benefit in a number of ways, including operating support for museums and community arts centers, arts integration and guest artist presentations in schools, and continuing education and supplies for working artists.
“Congratulations to the artists, arts organizations and communities that have received grants this fiscal year,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “The Mississippi Arts Commission is proud to support the individuals and organizations that support and enrich our state with creativity.”
Grant applications were reviewed by a group of panelists with artistic, managerial, educational and peer expertise. MAC’s Board of Commissioners reviewed the panelists’ recommendations before making final funding decisions.
In addition to making direct grants, MAC has accepted 22 schools into its Whole Schools Initiative program. The program provides educators with intensive professional development for integrating the arts across the curriculum.
MAC also approved 39 artists and performing groups to its Artist Roster and Teaching Artist Roster, which include many of the best artists and arts demonstrators working in the state. The Artist Roster is updated annually in print and digital versions, and the newest edition will be published in the fall.
Non-profit organizations or schools can utilize MAC’s Minigrant program to support a performance or workshop by a Roster Artist. The next opportunity to apply for a Minigrant will be October 2017.
